5 Tips to making great content that connects

We all want to make great content but posting on a photo on your Instagram or a status update on Facebook needs to have some meaning so people care! I am constantly striving to share the best content that makes people think, connect or just smile, so here are some tips that I think are the most helpful when creating content.

  1. What are your goals? Why are you doing this and why do you want to share it? You might want to share a shirt your shop is selling or post up a song you made, but why? What is the intention behind it? It might look cool, but why will other people care about it? It’s good to connect to your audience. If you’re a bakery, you might not want to start posting about salads or clothing. Maybe if that shirt design has a piece of cake that you sell at your baker, but you generally want to remain on topic. Share something that will help your audience, you don’t want to be self-absorbed and “me, me me,”

  2. Pick a few platforms to post on. Pick one or two places to start off and then grow from there. For me, since I am a designer I like to share my content on Instagram and Facebook. I recently started adding the occasionally LinkedIn post, but I have made it my goal to always share on Instagram. The key is to share your work and what you are working on so people see what is happening in your business and brand. Your post doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to have a purpose and meaning. A photo without context is confusing, unless it’s the Mona Lisa.

  3. Be platform aware. Once you decide on the platforms you want to post on, you have to make sure you know what that platform’s specialty is. Instagram is good for photos, videos should go on Youtube, LinkedIn is for the professional, Twitter is more for news updates, quips and humor and TikTok is for the younger audience that likes entertainment. Research and learn what content will perform well on certain platforms and tailor your material so it translates well and your audience gets the most out of it.

  4. Don’t compare yourself to others. This is a hard one. In the time of always seeing updates from other brand, companies and influencers, it is easy to feel like something is lacking. It’s not about the number of followers or the amount of endorsements. It is about the intentions you have while sharing your content. If you’re only in it for the “likes” things aren’t going to last, but if you be authentic to your brand you’ll start to see your audience grow on its own.

  5. Stay consistent. Now you’ve figured out what you want to post and why you want to post. Now you just have to post often. How often? I would say everyday! You don’t have to jump in head first at the beginning but it is a good goal to try and post three times a week and then add a day once you become consistent with that. It’s great to share what you are creating and working on and if you don’t share it, no one will know!
